Hey i was wondering if anyone could help me, i was reading (god knows where cos i've read so many disney booklets and sheets) that if you speak a language you get a badge to put on your name badge so other could identify you. Well i was wondering how they allocate the badges, do you have to be fluent or does being able to get by count? Do you have a test or what?

Secondly does Sign Language count as a language and do you get a little badge for it?

Im not sure about sign language, but basically you just really have to be able to have a conversation with someone in it as far as i know..I would say you have to be pretty fluent in it though, like you wouldn't just get it on your badge if you did it at school when u were 12 or something! haha..

Oh God, I really hope they don't go by what you said you could speak in the interview. I did AS Spanish and A2 German but I don't think I could have much of a conversation in them now! I'd probably send people to the completely wrong side of the park or make them almost walk into the lagoon or something!

As far as I know, most countries that speak english use american sign language...so this "badge" would have to specify that you only know american sign language.

That is exciting, cause I know a fair amount of america sign language (not fluent, but a good amount!)

I know for sure there's a test, but I heard it's really simple. Trust me though the badges are a bit of a curse as well. Sure they're nice to have, but I had roomates (from Quebec) complaining for 2 reasons.

    1. French people were so happy to find someone who spoke french they asked them EVERYTHING about ANYTHING involving their vacation.

    2. People from France wern't very nice because they didn't speak "real" French.

I heard similar stories from co-workers from Brazil.

I do know there's one for Sign Language for sure, but you may want to double think getting a language pin, or at the very least get a "normal" tag then take the test and get a language one. That way if it's becoming more of a burden to you, you at least can switch back easily.

I know someone who had the spanish one and brazillians used to accost him because they assumed that he'd be able to understand them or something, even tho it's a completley different language.

actually of all languages sign languages are the easiest of transferable things. so if someone who spoke bsl and someone who spoke american sign language were in the same room they would be able to partake in more of a conversation than a french speaker and an english speaker.

and i supose its true about getting the language badge but i imagine it's different for sign language than languages

yeah I'd have to agree, I couldn't see anything wrong with getting a sign language one, unless you get a deaf person their on their own or something who had a lot of questions, but even that wouldn't be bad.

to be honest i think i might just use the opportunity to learn american and hunt for deaf people in the parks to practice my skills with.

I learnt from a little boy with down syndrome who i work with and he gets sulky when i ask too many times "what does that mean in sign" or "sign it for me" so i can only get away with topical words, so i only learnt "look at the snow" when it was snowing. he's cute though, even when he sulks

For spoken languages you do a phone test on a Monday to get your language badge...I guess you'd have to do a face-to-face one for ASL?

I was so proud when I got my little French flag on my name tag :) but in reality used the little Spanish I knew a lot more than French!! :)

Pretty much they ask you a few questions to see if you can carry on a conversation in that language.

I've got language badges from disneyland paris. i'm sure it works the same in florida, you have to say what languages you think u can speak then you do a test and its normally people who work at city hall who test people, for example if u want a spanish flag then you have a small conversation with a spanish person(cast member) and you have to be able to explain basic disney things like how to get to space mountain or at what time the parade is, if they think u speak well enough they give u a flag. i've got spanish and english although my english test was a bit stupid cos i'm english and i was tested by a german person cos there were no english people workin at city hall that day?!? i don't have french cos they don't give a flag for they country that u r in.
