I was wondering what you do about medication when your in Florida? Can you take the years supply with you? or do you have to take out your british prescription or what happens? Also how much are you going to have to pay for prescriptions out there. I get my meds free at the moment because in Wales all under 25s do but I've heard that meds in usa are mega expnsive.

I'm not sure about the rules in the UK ... but I asked my Pharmacist here in Canada and she said as long as it's refills I could take my perscriptions for the whole time I'm gone. I just had to give her a few days to make sure she would have enough to fill it.

I would definately reccomend asking your Pharmacist ... meds in the US are definately expensive.

According to our Pharmacist (who is also married to Jorden's cousin), he can take as much as he needs to take across the border for the time he is gone - but our Alberta insurance plan will only cover the cost of a total of 3 months at a time. Therefore if the medication is really expensive he will take 3 months worth with him and then I will send him the refill a few months after he leaves. Our situation has more to do with our Alberta Blue Cross/Health Care than taking it across the border. Plus its not too much of a hassle since he is going down on the summer/seasonal program and will not even be gone for 6 months this time. Hopefully this info will help someone. Seems like everyone is being told something different.

Well I, like a lot of girls, am on the birth control pill. I was able to get 9 months worth from my pharmacy and bring it with me. I just packed it in my suitcase and never said anything, but in retrospect, a letter from my doctor would have probably been a smart idea.

As for the remaining months I needed, my parents brought the rest with them when they came to visit.

Sarah, contaception continutation has been one of my main issues aswell. My answer to it was to have a 3 year implant put in- which i had done on tuesday, which absolutely kills!!
Luckily Im on no other medication so I should be ok. Although the thought of getting sick in the US seriously stresses me out!

hmm the contraceptive will be an issue for me. i have the injection every 3 months as im unable to have the pill - imight well have to get the implant ouch! my main problem will be that im diabetic so taking a huge supple of lancets and stuff and meds if im not allowed could get me in trouble. generally when i travel i carry on all my meds and have to let the air host/ess know that they are in my bag and stuff.

I managed to get a 12 month prescription from my doctor for the contraceptive pill. However I'm going for 18 months so will have to worry about the other 6 months while I'm there! Didn't fancy that implant thing!!!

My doctor gave me 12 months supply and a letter to state that he had authorised to give me them during my time in Disney. My mum ordered a repeat prescription for the last 6 months and posted it out to me, as i was there for 18 months too.

The pill isn't too expensive in the US, but before a doctor will give you anything, you have to have a full womanly test - smear and all. Thats expensive. Almost $200 if i remember correctly. Thats why i got my mum to order me a repeat prescription. No medical insurance will cover the tests or prescriptions, i looked in to it. Unless you have a policy from the US which is actually recognised by the Doctors. There are so many insurance places that some aren't recognised and you have to pay everything in full and then try to claim it back.

I'm worried about getting 12 months supply of my pill too.

When I went travelling my doctor would only give me 6 months supply. So when i was in Australia i had to find a doctor and get another 6 months worth. Long story but to sum it up i couldnt take the pills he's given me and I didnt realise this until i was in Fiji!! ;D So not much i could do about it by then!

If we take a doctors note/letter out to Florida, will a doctor out there be able to give us the US version of the same thing!??

I'm pretty sure that they can only because being an idiot i once forgot to pack my meds and i had to call my dr in the uk who then faxed thru a presciption to the hotel dr who then signed for them so i could get them BUT it was sooo expensive! like just having the dr sign for the stuff was about $25 then to pay for the meds on top!

I think it depends of the doctor (and maybe even the state?). :-\ I got the pill first time I was in the US as an aupair. I paid about $ 135 for the check-up and got some free samples. The pill was about 30 Bucks on refill. Most girls I know (here in Germany) did not get a 6-months prescription. :-[ Their parents sent them later. I guess I will do it like that too! ;D

I'd check with your doctor about whether you can get your Diabetes meds in advance. Otherwise is anyone coming to visit you while you're over there? If so then get a repeat perscription and ask them to get it before they come over. That's what I did for my asthma and exzama medication.
